How to Maintain the Roof of Your Home

The roof is among the most important parts of the house. Once it is damaged, you will surely have uncomfortable stay. Roof repairs can be very expensive as well. This is why you have to do your best to avoid seriously damaging it. One way of doing that is by regularly maintaining your roof. Check it regularly and spot potential problems. Dealing with simple problems right away will help prevent things from getting worst.

Before you start checking your roof, see to it that you stay safe. If you are working on the roof, you will need a harness as well as a strong rope. Make sure that your shoes have a slip-proof sole.

When should you check your roof?

It is ideal that you check the roof twice a year. Choose the time of year when the weather is calm. Do not go up to your roof when it is wet or icy. It is risky to do that because you might slip and fall.

You will also be able to check the roof better when it is dry and everything is clear.

Although checking it twice a year is ideal, you should still know when there is a need for you to go up there. For instance, there is a branch touching the roof. You have to check that and trim the said branch. You also have to remove the debris and other items that could have gotten on your roof especially after a storm. Also, you need to regularly check and clean its gutters.

What should you check?

When maintaining the roof, many just check the exterior part. However, you should also include the internal part of the roof. Go to your attic and see if there are markings there. Dark spots indicate leaks. Touch the said marks. If they are soft, then the leak is new. Take note of the marks so that you can trace them on the external part of the roof.

Aside from leaks, you will also need to check its other parts. You need to check if there are lose shingles. They are small and easy to replace, which is why you can easily do it yourself. However, the damage may not end with the shingles. There could be some serious damage underneath that. There might be a need to replace a portion of the roof. If such is necessary, call a professional right away. You might just cause more damage if you do it by yourself.

You also need to check cracks on the roof. This is especially true for the area around your chimney. If you have skylight, you need to check that area regularly as well. Regular maintenance of your roof is essential to prevent incurring serious damage. Checking your roof at least twice a year will help you identify problems and deal with them right away. You have to check the external and internal part of roof to identify leaks and cracks. You need to pay special attention to areas near the chimney and skylights.
