What You Should Expect When Replacing Your Roof

What You Should Expect When Replacing Your Roof

In almost every home onwer's life, there is a time when buying a new roof is unavoidable. This is really a hard task if you are not a home improvement genius. There are some things you should learn about what to expect when replacing your roof.

When it comes to a roof replacement, many people are unprepared for the temporary inconveniences that can occur during this type of project. A roof replacement can't be done over night, so to make sure the length of the project is as easy for you as possible, you'll want to prepare you, your home and your family for what to expect. While roofing contractors should give you some tips on how to prepare yourself and your house, it never hurts to be forewarned.

One of the first things to expect during your roof replacement is the debris that goes along with the demolition of your old roof. You've got a lot of material up there on your roof, and it's all going to be coming down.

Much of the demolition is orderly, but sometimes things can be blown or thrown away from the organized collection areas. To avoid damage from this debris, remove any yard decoration, vehicles, and other items that you feel could be in the path of flying shingles. It's also a really good idea to ask the contractor about how much room he or she thinks is going to be needed for a safety zone in your yard. You might want to give your neighbors a heads up on your plans in case they need to move some items as well.   Another thing you'll need to be prepared for is the noise. Pulling old roofing off takes effort and it's not without some noise. For that matter, hammering the new roofing materials into place is pretty loud as well. Many homeowners make it a point to be out of the house during work hours just for their convenience. Once again, it's a nice gesture to make your neighbors aware of the work that is going to begin so they don't end up with any unpleasant surprises either.

During the roof replacement process also be sure to consider the mess, danger and the noise inside the home. Generally, contractors have gotten much better about sealing off exposed portions of your home when the roof is removed, so that is not as much of a concern these days. However, set the expectations with your family that there will be slight changes for a few days.
